Sirmione

In Sirmione, two important farmer markets are held weekly: every Monday morning there is a vegetable- and fruit market on the Piazza Mercato and every Friday morning there is a non-food market on the Piazzo Montebaldo. Both very recommendable.

At the end of a small headland, that goes 4 km into the lake, Sirmione is located, on of the most romantic towns at Lake Garda. The town can only be reached through a pedestrian bridge, and therefore has no cars at all. And that’s not an unnecessary measure: the streets are very narrow and curvy and especially in the high season it’s very busy, but also very sociable. At the entrance of the town we can see the impressive water castle of the Scaligeri. It is a true fairytale castle with towers and overturns that dates back to the 13th century.
The church, that is probably the most popular among tourists, can be found right behind the antique draw bridge, left to the wall of the castle. It is the small church of Saint Anna, originating in about 1400, but that’s rumored to be even older. The church is open day and night, and the beautiful frescos can be admired in the shimmer of the candles that are always burning here.

Past the town, at the outskirts of the peninsula, there is a beautiful par, in which we can discover the remains of a large Roman villa, the Grotti di Catullo. Whether or not this famous Roman poet truly inhabited this villa, remains uncertain. It is certain however that he resided in Sirmione for a longer period of time. Maybe he also bathed in the healing sulfur water that rises up from the Fonte Botola, that’s located 18 meters beneath the water surface.
